
You climb into your rooftop tent bone-dry, zip up, fall asleep to the quiet, and wake up to a damp sleeping bag and a fogged-up rainfly that never actually saw a drop of rain. That’s not a leak. That’s you, breathing.
Every night, your body gives off roughly a pint of water vapor. Inside a sealed tent, that moisture has nowhere to go. It hits the cold underside of your rainfly and condenses right back onto your gear. Rooftop tents are especially prone to it because they sit exposed to the night’s full temperature swing, with just a thin shell between your warm breath and the cold air outside.
The fix isn’t a better tent. It’s airflow. Crack the windows a couple inches, even when it’s cold. A little cross-ventilation moves humid air out faster than it can settle. Skip the rainfly on clear, dry nights if you can; with no actual rain coming, it traps moisture more than it blocks anything. And keep damp gear (boots, jackets, towels) out of the tent entirely. It’s a slow humidifier working against you all night.
Where you park matters too. A spot with some airflow around the vehicle beats a wind-blocked pocket in the trees, cozy as that feels. Moving air is your best defense against a wet morning.
Your sleep setup plays a role too. A breathable mattress pad lets moisture pass through instead of pooling underneath you, and a sleeping bag rated a bit colder than you think you need means you can leave a window cracked without shivering for it. Small trade, big payoff.
And if you do wake up to a damp interior, don’t panic and don’t pack it away wet. Prop the tent open for ten minutes while you make coffee and let the morning air do the work before you fold it down. Throwing a damp tent into its cover is how a one-night issue turns into a mildew smell that lingers for a season.
Condensation isn’t a defect. It’s physics, and it’s manageable once you know what’s actually happening a few inches above your head. Sleep dry out there.
